It's because critics like to project their own bullshit on to movies more and more orch, i read an alien covenant review by a guy who outright hated the movie because he felt it poked fun at religion balewut

They can't be objective, it feels like they're bringing to much of their own baggage into the movies they're reviewing rather then discussing what they see as the pro's and cons of the film they're watching and what they feel an audience can get from going to see it.

Some things that sound good about the movie from this review

You Were Never Really Here, review: an experience fully capable of blowing you away

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/20...ally-review-experience-fully-capable-blowing/

"The film drop-kicks you into a cosmos of pain, depravity and blunt-force trauma with only the faintest flickers of light at the end of the tunnel"2beornot2be

"The film’s body count is somewhere in the Chuck Norris vicinity" boblol

"Jonny Greenwood’s score is a deadly engine of threat and anguish, chugging away with agitated synth percussion and moaning little hints of jazzy 1970s sleaze" balewut

looks more like a "oh that was kinda cool" movie you'd catch late at night on an indie film channel way back when but no masterpiece. maybe they just mean its competently made?

I think it's being viewed as a 21st century taxi driver. It's about a guy who deals with getting girls back from sex traffickers by using his own brand of violence, so far so very taken, but apparently the movie examines how this only makes things much worse in the long run.

Phoenix's character is also an iraq war vet with PTSD, It could be an interesting study on the old school dirty harry type masculine tropes today that look to be on full display in things like the punisher or the new death wish movie and the actual ramifications of those actions. It's also supposed to be very arthouse with some scenes lacking any kind of context. A lot of it is told through phoenix's characters fragile and messed up psyche, so hopefully there is plenty of weirdness.

But that's just what i've been able to gather from some critics and at the end of the day what the hell do they ever know. I hope it's not as simplistic as the trailers make it out to be, but that's probably what will end up happening.

Also the version screened at cannes was just a work in progress hence the tweaking that collin is talking about.

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE: A Hallucinatory, Horrifying Masterpiece

    https://www.filminquiry.com/you-were-never-really-here-2017-review/

It's the rare film that, after the overwhelming first viewing experience, doesn't feel like hyperbole to call a genre redefining masterpiece.

I'm getting blade runner 2049 flashbacks alexjonesangery

    Please actually be good FFS
